The Science (Without the Textbook)
Here is how it works. We excite mercury vapor to pump out a concentrated blast of short-wave UV radiation. We specifically tune the output to the 254nm and 365nm lines. Why? Because that’s the exact “sweet spot” needed to break the chemical bonds in your ink’s photoinitiators. One thing to watch out for: your ballast. You’ve got to match it to the lamp’s rated voltage and wattage. If you under-drive the bulb, your prints will stay tacky.
