When you’re in the middle of photoresist exposure for a PCB, there’s no such thing as “close enough.” One tiny slip and the whole batch is scrap. That’s why we lean on Gallium Iodide (GaI) lamps. Standard UV lights just aren’t tight enough for the high-density patterns we’re pushing these days. The secret is in the peak. Most mercury vapor lamps throw light everywhere—it’s a broad mess. But GaI concentrates all that energy into one narrow, sharp peak. Think of it like the difference between a floodlight and a laser. It stops the light from bleeding or blurring around the edges of your mask. You get crisp, clean traces. To keep it that way, we obsess over the gas fill and pressure inside the tube. If those aren’t locked in, your resist will either under-cure or just fry. Then there’s the hardware. These aren’t some cheap tubes you pick up at a warehouse. We use high-purity quartz because regular glass would just soak up the UV before it ever hit the board. But here’s the catch: these things gethot. Because they’re pumping out so much energy to cure the resist quickly, they generate a massive amount of heat. If your cooling fans are dusty or your chilled water loop is acting up, the lamp temperature will drift. Once that happens, the spectral peak shifts, and suddenly your perfectly good batch is ruined. Putting these into a cleanroom is usually pretty straightforward. We build them to drop right into your existing exposure frames, and the connectors are beefy enough to handle vibrations so you don’t get any flickering mid-cycle. Just keep an eye on your power. Any little flicker in the voltage leads to inconsistent intensity. On the final PCB, that looks like lines that vary in width, which is a nightmare for quality control. One last thing to keep in mind: you’re trading some lifespan for this kind of power. These lamps do fade over time. It’s not a sudden crash, just a slow decay. The best way to handle it is to track your millijoules (mJ/cm²) every single day. As the light dims, you just nudge your exposure times up to compensate. Simple as that.
